Fred Deegbe: Heeling The World

Ghana’s Fred Deegbe is on a mission to make world class shoes in Ghana. This in response partly to a statement that someone had made in passing to him that world class shoes could not be made in Ghana. Fred walked of a shoe store admiring his new acquired pierre cardinshoes and wondered why shoes like the ones he was wearing could not be made in Ghana. Fred was born in the US to Ghanaian parents and later moved to Ghana where he graduated from Ghana’s Asheshi University. His first entrepreneurial venture was a company called Made in Ghana which was focused on the production of T Shirts and Umbrellas. He later would go into the corporate world in the fields of advertising and banking although he always wanted to go and start up a venture of his own. One that would make a difference in Ghana. The trigger came when a shoe maker gave him a response to his question about whether high quality world class shoes could be made in Ghana. The shoe make commented that world class shoes could not be manufactured in Ghana. So in 2011, about a year into his corporate banking career, he partnered with a friend and set out to establish Heel the World, An Accra based company with a mission to produce high end shoes.  His company now currently has about 12 employees.
